Sacrificing to Make Sacred

Points to Ponder: May 7, 2018

Sacrifice means to make sacred. Sacrifice also means giving something up as an offering to God. When we give something up as an offer to God, it is made sacred. God is not a human. He does not have a body. He does not need what we offer to Him. We go the worship places, offer fruits, sweets, donations. Also, sometimes animals are offered to God. People even go and offer themselves to God. It is believed that such offerings bring fortune to us. But we need to check this belief system. Why would God be appeased with fruits, sweets, money, animals or the human body. What use are these of to Him. He does not need all that we value in this mundane world. We need to look deep into this practice of sacrifice and understand that the purpose is not to appease God but to make sacred. We offer something to God to make it sacred. How does that happen?

God is the Ocean of peace, purity, love, bliss and power. Man today is full of lust, anger, ego, attachment and greed. Man performs actions at three levels viz. actions of the mind, speech and deeds. All our acts, be it acts of mind or words or deeds, they are all infused with the energy of lust, anger, ego, attachment and greed. These vices are the impurity that has crept into the soul. Offering up means to give our mind, body and wealth to God. This means to consider them as God’s possessions which are given to us in trust. As trustees, we are not owners of our our mind, body and wealth but caretakers who have to invest them on the directions of God. Since God is the Ocean of peace, purity, love, bliss and power, when we are trustees, we have to use our mind, body and wealth in accordance with the dictates of peace, purity, love, bliss spiritual power. We also need to understand what God’s purpose in plan is so that we can serve His purpose. Tomorrow we will understand God’s purpose.
